Where or what is "The Real Western Massachusetts"? A subjective question to say the least, that doesn't need an answer. Every person residing in the four counties that make up Western Massachusetts is an integral component of the real Western Massachusetts. The people who make up this area are not the same and this is true for almost any other location in the country. If this is true, why is it that in 2008 people are still being discriminated against because of their race, gender, class, religious denomination, sexual orientation or even political party affiliation? Every demographic across the United States has a complaint as to why their certain group is marginalized. Conversely, there are some who will tell you that everything in America is perfect and the one's complaining should look at their own situations and help themselves. It is easy to look and see all the "effects" discrimination and other forms of injustice have on society but no one ever examines or scrutinizes the "causes" . If an apple tree produces all bad apples, the apples cannot be blamed. We all must examine the tree and the roots.

"The Real Western Massachusetts" will explore the social, economic and political landscape of Western Mass. Of course, there will be some posts dedicated to larger national news and national history but for the most part I will be giving my opinion and the truth, as i see it, on the affairs within the 413 area code. I welcome people to comment and even suggest topics they feel are important in our state, cities and communities, if I have not mentioned them.

Nice idea. A thought; as long as people are people they will act like people. They will harbor ill will against the other. It's how we are. Just because time has passed as humans have existed, doesn't mean that these natural inclinations fade with time. Each human is the same, for good or for bad. And they only have the duration of their particular lifetime to work out what their life will be. We can observe our history and assses the results of human behavior in the past and then try to ammend our own behavior in a more positive way, but we remain human.

Will the real western Massachusetts please stand. It will have the fresh air and scenery of the Berkshires mixed with the eclectic culture of Northampton and the thriving economy once found in Springfield.
